The Kirra Surfriders Club formed in 1962 by local surfers from across the area. It was the first association of its sort within Queensland and their mission remains the same some sixty years later “To ensure the future and continued development of the areas boardriders and of the club”
The club’s early meetings were held in the dressing rooms of a nearby surf shop, the space donated by a passionate local and coincidentally, more than half a century later, the clubs’ meetings are now held at the Kirra Pavilion, just a few steps from the original dressing rooms.
Kirra Surfriders Club embrace all from within the local surfing community, inviting all standards of competitors to join, however one look at the club’s history and you quickly understand that like many of the clubs located along the forty-two kilometre Gold Coast coastline, Kirra is committed to junior development and unearthing the sports next stars.
Michael Peterson, Peter Townend, Mick Fanning, Dale Richards and Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew are the clubs’ founding fathers and surfers who went on to dominate on the world stage.
In 1985, the club hosted the “Kirra Teams Challenge” inviting clubs from across the country to compete in the three-day grass roots surf contest.
